Pisa Pharmaceutics is a Mexican company with 80 years of history that operates in Mexico, the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. It is dedicated to the fabrication and commercialization of injectables, medicines, medical equipment, and nutritional products, such as the Electrolit beverages.
PISA Pharmaceutics wanted to optimize their processes and testing execution time for their migration project from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA in their productive plants. At that moment, they only carried out manual tests, however, these did not have the full coverage they needed. They also did not have the necessary personnel to carry them out on time, which is why they left out certain tests.
PISA was looking for a tool that could ease the process. In Getecsa, through a consulting process and understanding of their needs, we helped them automate their tests to have an effective migration, with the coverage and amount of tests needed.
PISA manages different plants in which the same process is used. This causes the software testing process activities to be repetitive, which could lead to human error or entering the data incorrectly. This is why it was necessary to decide on implementing automation. With this process, the data is entered, the tests are executed, and it can be repeated the needed number of times in different environments and plants.
The first step that we carried out was the implementation of the automation tool, which in this case was Tricentis Tosca. PISA uses SAP, which caused the integration to be seamless. After the tool’s implementation, a server and database server provisioning was carried out, amongst other processes, to start with the automation.
The next phase was to analyze the test cases, which was a month-long process. Having a good number of test cases, the automation was carried out. While we were analyzing, we were also executing.
23 scripts were developed, which comprise approximately 800 SAP transactions with variations between testing scenarios.
During the process, we faced the challenge of using SAP, which is a very complete and integrated tool, which makes it hard to test. However, thanks to the communication and disposition of the client to share the necessary information on time, we were able to complete the project without many difficulties.
At the end, we trained the team in both the project that was carried out, as well as training in the tool. This, with the goal that the tool can still be used to its maximum potential even after the project ended.
The migration project had an 8-month duration. We achieved the automation of more than 1000 cases, and there was a time of work reduction of 50%.
We are still carrying out more projects with PISA, and they are still using the tool daily and renewing licenses. After the implementation, 24 scripts in-house in Tosca have been created. Pisa is also looking to implement the tool and boost automation in other areas of the enterprise.
To prepare for the SAP S/4HANA migration with good automated tests. We recommend analyzing the time your testing is taking, the people you need to carry them out, and the errors that are happening during them. Automation can save 50% of the time or more of testing with people manually, it also ensures the quality of your migration, and guarantees a faster Time-to-Market.
